'Poro Calon Bapak' Gank Goes to Malang

One weeks ago, we have short trip in South Malang by visiting several tourist sites in 2 days. we have visited Bolu-bolu beach, Banyu Anjlok waterfall, and Lenggoksono beach. Both of them located adjacent and can be accessed at once using speed boat. Lenggoksono beach is the entrance beach before we lead to Bolu-bolu and Banyu Anjlok. Bolu-bolu beach well known as its swimming, snorkeling, and diving spot. While Banyu Anjlok is a waterfall which known as its panoramic water stream, it’s flow falls directly into the sea. 

Due the destination was new and still unpopular so the route was not easy. To go there we spent 5 hours through Sidoarjo, Pandaan, Pasuruan, and Malang city. When we reached Malang city, we still have to pass 30 km of forest road and 15 km of forest tracks. The road classified as mountain pass so it has steep slope around 30 to 35 degree and it's also has so many hairpin turn likes Col de Braus, the name of mountain pass in France. 

When we arrived in Lenggoksono beach we could find food stall, worship, snorkeling-diving rental, and resort. There will be some tour guide too. They will offer you to rent their diving and snorkeling equipment or using their boat. Based on my experience, we will asked to pay IDR 50.000 for each person. Each boat only allowed to take 10 persons. It’s included life vest and 3 tour guide who will help us along the trip. The boat can be rent started from 07.00 AM until the dusk time (around 17.00-18.00 PM). I personally suggest you to rent the boat in the morning, so you can enjoy their service all the day. 

Introducing My Supervisor

His name's Endry, 42 years old but fashioned like teenager. He likes to joking around, even it failed sometimes. He knows a lot about me and he treats me like his own son. That's why i'm so respecting him. Almost every weeks he asking me to join his project in Potteran Island. He such a personage in the island and (maybe) everyone know about him. One more, he never wanted to be respected. He just doing what he have to do to help other peoples.

Sampling in Balekambang

Few month ago i have asked by Siska to accompany her in Balekambang for sampling. We went there on saturday night by rental car along with our juniors. We also brought some sampling equipment such as chloroform, cooling box, and ziplock plastic. Chloroform used to preserve the sample, cooling box used to store the sample, and ziplock plastic used to separate one sample with another.

Balekambang is an area located 65 km from the central of Malang. The access to reach this area is not easy due to up-and-down road. It requires 3 to 4 hours to reach this area. Along the way we will pass jungle and the sugar cane plantations. Balekambang also has 2 km long of coastline and dominated eith white and light brown sand. Like the other beach on the south coastline of Java, its sea has big waves and swift currents. Hence it's not recommended or even forbidden for the visitor to swim there. In Balekambang, there are 3 small islands nearby: Ismoyo Island,  Anoman Island, and Wisanggeni Island. Above the Ismoyo Island, there is a Hindu shrine named Pura Luhur Amertha Jati that becomes the main attraction/selling point of this area. We could reach it by crossing a bridge from the main beach. The shrine is open for 24 hours and there is no entrance fee for it. Meanwhile the bridge to Pulau Anoman is already broken hence the visitor couldn't get into that island. 

We have several sample that will be used to practicum, research and conservation. The first sample is seaweed or Algae, the second is brittle star or Ophiuroidea, and the third we have sea slug or Mollusca and the last is sea buds or Blastoid. We found so many species during the sampling. However, we only brought several species for our project.

Today my lecturer told me about ISPU (Indeks Standar Pencemaran Udara) or usually known as API (Air Polluting Index). In his lecture, my lecturer often mentioned about Kyoto Protocol, Do you ever heard about it? If you never heard about it before dont worry, that’s will be the main topic of this post. After surfing the internet around 1,5 hours, actually I don’t get the point of this agreement (not yet). But overally I can understanding it a little bit. 

Well, the Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement linked to the united nations framework convention on climate change, which held in Kyoto, Japan and commits its parties by setting internationally binding emission reduction targets. 

Recognizing that developed countries are principally responsible for the current high levels of GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emissions in the atmosphere as a result of more than 150 years of industrial activity. This convention adopted on 11 December 1997 and entered into force on 16 February 2005. The detailed rules for the implementation of the Protocol were adopted at COP 7 in Marrakesh, Morocco, in 2001, and are referred to as the "Marrakesh Accords." Its first commitment period started in 2008 and ended in 2012.

In Doha, Qatar, on 8 December 2012, united nations frameword held the advanced of the Kyoto protocol called "Doha Amendment to the Kyoto Protocol". The amendment includes:

• New commitments for the parties to the Kyoto Protocol who agreed to take on commitments in a 2^nd commitment period from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2020 (continuesly)
• A revised list of greenhouse gases (GHG) to be reported on by Parties in the second commitment period. (keep on progressing)
• Amendments to several articles of the Kyoto Protocol which specifically referenced issues pertaining to the first commitment period and which needed to be updated for the second commitment period. (updating)

The targets for the first commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol cover emissions of the six main greenhouse gases, namely:
• Carbon dioxide (CO₂);
• Methane (CH₄);
• Nitrous oxide (N₂O);
• Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs);
• Perfluorocarbons (PFCs); and
• Sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆)

Kyoto Protocol affect many things in another united nations agreement and politic. One of that known as ‘Carbon Emission Trading’ which involve my country Indonesia as the main seller. Even it seems that there is a profitable chance during the agreement but the fact is very contrast.

109th Graduation Party

On last Sunday, We had a graduation party in our department. There are 10 graduates student and more than 50  ungraduated students  featured with 'red and white theme' who are joined to escorting the graduates from Graha ITS to Biology department. The graduation party began on 8 o’clock in the morning until the evening. Totally, there are 687 of graduates student who came from different faculty. 

Well, I had a lot of fun by took some crucial pict and another crazy things with my friends. Oh one more, Somehow I feel so ambitious lately and I don’t know why I 've elected to be the leader of our squad. and I keep doing it in recent 2 years !      

Fall Internship

One week ago, my class went to Majapahit Agro Lestari Hotel, Mojokerto. We had some internship about plant's taxonomy there. We collected morphology and property data from every plants and looking for some type of plants that would be needed for our next practicum. I had talk a bit about Majapahit Agro Lestari (MAL) on my last post "Journey to Cangar". On that post I have little discussed about this place and take some photo of me (who cares, no one want to know about it, haha).

MAL is a natural hotel which located on Mojokerto highland. Thousands of plant species, Cold and cool air, hum of the insects, the smell of the forest litter, acres of pinery, ledge type of waterfall, bla bla bla~ such a beautiful sight and wonderful thing~ You couldn't find any single thing above in Surabaya. MAL use concept of artificial forest inside, and natural forest outside the building. Like another hotel, it must be have various facility such as swimming pool, gym, outbound, rafting, family gathering spot, etc. For the rooms, they use concept of natural village house in deep country, so there was many of ‘true’ farmer who had worked around the hotel, just like the real deep country.

I have many activities there, made a monograph, plants identification, calculated the population density, had a lunch, studied about TOGA plants, took some photos, etc. Actually, depend on the schedule, actually we back to Surabaya at 18.00. The fact we back to surabaya on the evening (around 16.00). For some reason, We had to come back early. But I feel so happy, that was a different experience for me to study at the ‘real place’  for the scientist, especially for biologist. (since it was my first internship).
